The question we are asked most often is not “where”. It is “when”. Because the same place can be magical in May and disappointing in August. Here is a calendar for the whole of 2027 — one destination for each month, and the reason to go exactly then.

The season decides almost everything: whether you will see Patagonia with clear roads, whether the sea in the Seychelles will be like a mirror, whether Crete will be in bloom or burnt dry. We have arranged twelve months so that each one falls into its own best window.

January — Madeira

≈ 19 °C  ·  Eternal spring  ·  A winter escape

While Europe is grey, Madeira is green. An average of 18–20 degrees in January, hillsides in flower and mountains that climb above the clouds. Winter here is not endured — it simply does not exist. The ideal month for the levada walks, for the laurel forest and for your first breath of fresh air after the holidays. See our journey to Madeira.

February — Argentina

Southern summer  ·  Patagonia at its peak  ·  Harvest in Mendoza

The seasons are reversed — and that is precisely why February is the golden month for Argentina. Patagonia is accessible and warm, the Perito Moreno glacier cracks under the sun, and the vineyards of Mendoza are weeks away from the harvest. Buenos Aires lives outdoors until late. The only month in which you can have both glaciers and tango in a T-shirt. Explore Argentina: The Art of Living.

March — The Caribbean

28–30 °C  ·  Sea at 27 °C  ·  The end of the dry season

The dry season in the Caribbean runs from December to April, but March is its peak: settled weather, fewer people after the winter holidays and a sea the temperature of a bath. Guadeloupe and Saint Lucia are two completely different worlds — French ease and volcanic drama — on the same blue sea. See Caribbean: Two Islands, One Soul.

April — Japan

Cherry blossom  ·  15–20 °C  ·  A ten-day window

Some journeys are planned around a date. The cherry blossom is exactly that — the wave moves up from the south and reaches Kyoto in early April, and the window is roughly ten days. The temples, the gardens and the evenings under the lit trees make Japan a completely different country for those two weeks. It is planned at least a year ahead — write to us if you are thinking about 2027.

May — Crete

22–25 °C  ·  Hillsides in bloom  ·  Empty ruins

May is the month when Crete is at its most generous. The island is still green, wildflowers cover the slopes, the sea is warm enough to swim, and Knossos and Phaistos can be seen without a queue and without the heat. In August the same island is another story altogether. See the journey to Crete.

June — Puglia

26–29 °C  ·  Before the heat  ·  The sea already warm

The furnace of the south is not yet at full power. June in Puglia means warm sea, long evenings in the white lanes of Ostuni and Locorotondo, olive groves without dust and trulli that are not besieged by coaches. A month later the same places are twice as full. Explore Puglia.

July — Bali

Dry season  ·  28 °C  ·  Low humidity

Bali’s dry season runs from April to October, and July and August are its driest months — with humidity pleasantly low for the tropics. The rice terraces are at their most saturated green, the sunrises above Ubud are clear, and the ocean at Uluwatu is for surfing and sunsets. Yes, this is also the busiest month — which is why we keep groups to eight guests and stay away from the obvious places. See Bali: Art Retreat.

August — Sardinia

Sea at 26 °C  ·  The warmest water  ·  A boat is essential

August is the month when the Mediterranean is at its warmest — and in Sardinia that matters, because its most beautiful beaches can only be reached by water. Cala Goloritzé, Cala Mariolu, the coves of the Ogliastra: by boat in the morning, before everyone else. The island is full, but there are whole stretches of coast reachable only from the sea. Explore Sardinia.

September — Hawaii

27 °C  ·  After the summer wave  ·  A warm ocean

September is Hawaii’s quiet secret: the American summer is over, the children are back at school, and the weather is exactly the same. On Oahu you can be on the beach in the morning, walking through jungle to a waterfall at midday and flying by helicopter over the green ridges of the Ko’olau in the afternoon. Few places gather such different days onto one island. Get in touch about a tailor-made journey.

October — The Seychelles

Between the monsoons  ·  A calm sea  ·  29 °C

The Seychelles have two ideal windows in the year — April–May and October–November. These are the weeks between the two monsoons, when the wind drops and the sea turns to glass. That is exactly when island-hopping by boat between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue is a pleasure rather than an ordeal. See Seychelles: The Art of Island Living.

November — Morocco

22–25 °C  ·  The desert becomes bearable  ·  Clear nights

In summer the Sahara is impossible; in November it becomes exactly what it should be: warm days, cool evenings and nights with so many stars the sky looks like a mistake. Morocco in November is the riads of Marrakech, the Atlas mountains with the first snow on the peaks, and one night among the dunes. Write to us about a tailor-made route.

December — Lapland

Polar night  ·  Northern lights  ·  Glass igloos

If you have spent the whole year chasing the sun, December is the month to try the opposite. Lapland in December is polar dusk all day long, forests under a metre of snow, husky sleds and nights in a glass igloo where you fall asleep looking upwards — hoping the sky will begin to move. The shortest day of the year, spent in the most beautiful way. Get in touch.

How to use this calendar

Not as a list to be ticked off, but as a way of turning the question around: instead of “where shall we go in July”, ask yourself “when is it best where I want to go” — and plan the holiday around that. The difference between the right and the wrong month is often greater than the difference between two hotels.

And one more thing: the best boutique hotels in the world have ten or fifteen rooms. Private guides and boats are a limited resource too. For long-haul destinations, plan six to nine months ahead — not because of the airfare, but because those particular places fill up first.

We create boutique journeys for small groups of up to eight guests, and tailor-made routes. If a month in this calendar has caught your eye — explore the collection or simply write to us.

Twelve months. Twelve worlds. One question: where do we begin.

Frequently asked questions

When to travel

Which is the best month for a long-haul trip?

It depends on the direction. The Caribbean — December to April. The Seychelles — April–May and October–November. Bali — May to September. Argentina — the European winter, when it is summer there. The Mediterranean — May, June and September.

How far in advance should a long-haul trip be planned?

We recommend six to nine months. Less because of airfares than because the best boutique hotels have only ten or so rooms, and private experiences and guides are booked months ahead.

Which months should I avoid in the tropics?

The Caribbean — June to November, because of the rainy and hurricane season. Bali — November to March. The Seychelles have no bad month, but December–January and July–August bring more wind and waves.

When is the best time to travel in Europe without the crowds?

May, June and September. The sea is warm, the temperatures are pleasant and the biggest wave is avoided. April is wonderful for Crete and cultural travel, though the sea is still cool.
